Polynucleotides
Polynucleotides treatments are a groundbreaking advancement, naturally regenerating skin to visibly diminish wrinkles and sagging for enduring rejuvenation.
Young, glowing skin is characterised by smooth texture, even tone and natural radiance. Youthful features typically include a well-defined jawline, high cheekbones and a firm raised forehead.
As we age, our skin gradually loses its natural moisture, elasticity and begins to sag. This can create a tired, aged appearance, with hollowing under eyes, cheek volume loss, with deeper lines around the mouth and a heavy jawline. Polynucleotides are a biostimulator that work at a cellular level to powerfully boost our own collagen and elastin. They have great results addressing these age-related changes, enhancing tissue regeneration and improving overall skin health.
What are Polynucleotides?
In a nutshell they are a powerful skin booster, but they are so much more than that!
They improve the skin quality in the area injected by providing the building blocks of skin hydration and stimulating the generation of fibroblasts and collagen.
Polynucleotides derive from filtered and purified fragments of fish which mirror human DNA. This injectable serum wakes up our skin to provide serious benefits and incredible, visible results.
With 41 years of scientific research, 36 years of medical application, 1.8 million uses and 90 clinical trials Polynucleotides have a proven track record in tissue and cartilage regenerative medicine. The evidence for the power and safety profile of Polynucleotides is undisputed in both the medical and aesthetic fields.
Once injected they stimulate the body’s natural fibroblast production, resulting in increased collagen (47% in 23 days) and a thicker, healthier epidermis (52% in 23 days). They provide the building blocks for skin hydration and thanks to their antioxidant properties, provide protection against harmful external agents such as UV rays.
You will notice a real improvement in how your skin looks and feels, a marked improvement in fine lines and wrinkles as well as more youthful features and volume restored.

Areas Polynucleotide can help you look and feel your best.
What areas can Polynucleotide treatments be used for?
Polynucleotides are most commonly used for facial areas, but have great rejuvenating effects on the neck and décolletage, hands, arms, knees and abdomen. Because of their chemical properties, amazing effects on our skin and safety profile, their list of applications seem endless.
Having said that if there was one area I would recommend Polynucleotides for it would be to address the age related changes we see around the eye.

Polynucleotide Procedure
The consultation and treatment last about 45 minutes.
After a thorough discussion about the procedure and completing the consent forms, I will take a pre-procedure photograph.
Polynucleotide injections are slightly more uncomfortable than Botox, but are usually well tolerated. I’m happy to use numbing cream to minimise any discomfort.
Treatment consists of a number of superficial injections with a fine needle or cannula. You will notice improvements after one treatment but for optimal, long lasting results, 3 treatments, 2-3 weeks apart, after which 1 treatment every 6 months is advised.
You can resume most of your normal activities immediately after the treatment.
There will be some minor redness and swellings at the injection sites and these will take 24-48 hours to fully resolve.
You will be given full verbal and written aftercare instructions and a complimentary 2-week follow-up appointment.
All my patients are offered a review appointment 2 weeks after treatment where we can examine the treated area and discuss the final results.
Polynucleotides Aftercare
Immediately following your treatment, there may be tiny swellings of product and redness at the injection sites. This is normal and can take 24-48 hours to disperse and spread into the skin fully. These should be allowed to settle naturally and NOT massaged in.
After the Polynucleotide treatment, it is best to:
- Avoid touching the area for 6 hours after the treatment.
- Avoid lying down for 6 hours and try to sleep face up that night.
- Avoid exercise for 24hrs after treatment.
- Avoid alcohol for 24hrs after treatment.
- Avoid extremes of heat for the first 3 days after treatment.
- Avoid cosmetic products containing Retinoids for 3 days before/after the procedure.
- Do not apply makeup for 24 hours post-treatment, but can use a gentle cleanser.
- Do not wear compressive masks, helmets or goggles for 5 days after the procedure.
- Sunglasses may be helpful after an eye treatment.
- A scarf may be helpful if treating the neck area.
You may like to try arnica cream. It is commonly used to reduce bruising, swelling, inflammation and pain.
Polynucleotide Review Appointments
All Polynucleotide patients are offered a review appointment 2 weeks following their treatment date. We’ll examine the treated area and discuss the final results.

What are Polynucleotides?
In a nutshell Polynucleotides are a powerful skin booster, but they are so much more than that!

You will notice a real improvement in how your skin looks and feels, more youthful volume and features restored as well as a marked improvement in fine lines and wrinkles.
How do Polynucleotides work?
Polynucleotides derive from filtered and purified fragments of fish which mirror human DNA.
Once injected, the DNA fragments are slowly absorbed into your skin without leaving any lumps. Once integrated within your skin, they start signalling your skin in 3 main ways.
Firstly, Polynucleotides stimulate fibroblast cells to multiply in number and boost their activity. As cell renewal improves, so will collagen production, hydration levels, and skin glow. Your skin becomes more resilient with improved elasticity and wrinkles softened.
Secondly, they are incredible antioxidants that protect the skin by scavenging free radicals that would normally set off cellular damage.
Thirdly, they function as wound healing agents signalling your skin to intensely repair. This helps improve scars, reduce stretch marks, and improve skin texture concerns. As it enters repair mode, your skin’s discolouration improves, leaving a more even tone.
Additionally, polynucleotides produce a mild increase in volume and tightening as an overall effect.
What are the benefits of Polynucleotide treatments?
Clinical studies have shown “Polynucleotides can increase Collagen up to 47% in 23 days & help create a thicker & healthier Epidermis with measured improvements of 52% in 23 days”.
Thanks to polynucleotides’ antioxidant properties, inflammation is reduced and youthful volume and hydration is restored.
Great benefits can be seen in a variety of skin related conditions including:
- Revitalisation – to combat general signs of ageing
- Loss of volume and dark circles around the eyes
- Deep lines & wrinkles
- Thin crepey skin
- Sagging skin: tightens and plumps
- Rehydration for dull skin at any age
- Scarring: acne, trauma, post operative, stretch marks
- Rosacea
How are Polynucleotides typically injected?
Polynucleotides are injected very superficially into your skin via two methods. In some cases, it may be injected with a very tiny needle leaving tiny blebs on the surface. These blebs can disappear over the day but may remain for slightly longer in some people.
Alternatively, a blunt-ended tube, cannula, is often used to spread the product evenly. Generally, following cannula treatment, you may notice some swelling for up to a week due to a temporary lifting effect. Afterward, the product is completely absorbed into your skin without leaving any lumps, bumps, or overfilling.
For maximal effects it is advised to have 3 treatments 2-3 weeks apart, with one treatment every 6 months to maintain these.
Where are Polynucleotides typically injected?
Polynucleotides are most commonly used for facial areas but have great rejuvenating effects on the neck and décolletage, hands, arms, knees and abdomen. It is suitable for both men and women of all ages. The injection efficiently reduces signs of ageing like wrinkles, fine lines and plumps up sagging skin. Having said that if there was one area I would recommend Polynucleotides for it would be to address the age related changes we see around the eye.
This is an area that has been traditionally more challenging to treat with certain limitations and cost implications. Polynucleotides allow us to address the tear trough as well as other changes such as dark circles, thin crepey skin that we could not before, in a safe manner with great results.
Why are Polynucleotides treatments so good for treating the eye area?
Polynucleotides is a very thin water-like substance which improves skin quality whereas traditional under eye filler/Tear Trough filler is hyaluronic acid which is a much more viscous substance and is designed to fill hollows under eyes.
They work with the body’s DNA to promote cellular regeneration. This innovative treatment stimulates collagen and elastin production, which are essential proteins for maintaining the skin’s structure and elasticity and works to treat fine lines and dark eye circles.
There has been a recent rise in searches for ‘under eye fillers gone wrong’ this is due to the fact that hyaluronic acid-based fillers in tear trough filler can sometimes make the under-eye area appear puffier, as hyaluronic acid attracts water and can migrate. Polynucleotides eyes will not ‘fill’ the under eye area and will not cause puffiness or migration of the product. The focus is on achieving natural-looking results that enhance the skin’s elasticity, reduce pigmentation and minimise fine lines and wrinkles.
How long do Polynucleotides take to work?
It will take 2-3 weeks to fully appreciate the benefits. This is because polynucleotides act at the cellular level, and this takes time. Although you may notice some improvement initially, for maximal effects it is advised to have 3 treatments 2-3 weeks apart, after which only one treatment every 6 months is needed to maintain these.
How long do the results of a Polynucleotides last?
The results of a Polynucleotide treatments typically last up to 6 months, with some patients reporting results lasting up to 12 months.
However, the longevity of the results depends on the individual, adherence to the above protocol and their lifestyle habits.
Is there any downtime after Polynucleotide treatments?
There is minimal downtime with this treatment with most normal activities being able to resume shortly after with some restrictions. There can be small bumps under the skin and redness which typically disappear within 24 to 48 hours. For this reason I would recommend avoidance of any important face to face engagements for the rest of that day.
As with any injectable treatment there is a small risk of bruising with this treatment. If you do get a bruise you can cover it with makeup after 24 hours or wear it with pride! It usually resolves within 7 days. It will leave no lasting effect.
Are Polynucleotides treatment safe?
Polynucleotides are very safe procedure with very few risks of serious side effects.
As you can imagine, with any injectable treatments, some clients may experience temporary redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection site, but these side effects typically subside within a few days. There is a very small risk of infection, but this can be mitigated by choosing a reputable clinic and following proper aftercare instructions.
Its effects are on the skin and there is no danger of you ending up with a dramatically altered facial shape, volume, or an unwanted look. There is no risk of blocked blood vessels that can rarely happen with dermal fillers.
Do Polynucleotides injections hurt?
Polynucleotide treatment involves injections, so the experience can be likened to other injectable procedures. The level of discomfort varies from person to person, but many patients describe the sensation as a slight pinch or sting during the injection.
I can offer numbing creams to help reduce your discomfort.
Who are suitable for Polynucleotide treatments?
Anyone who is above 18 years old, that is wanting to improve the health and quality of their skin. It is a great anti-ageing treatment so can be used in a preventative way but will also improve the appearance of skin that is showing signs of ageing.
Who should avoid having Polynucleotides?
- Pregnant women or breast feeding mothers.
- If you are suffering from any skin infection in or near the treatment area, including cold sores.
- You are suffering with an immunosuppressant conditions
- You have a fish allergy.
- You are allergic to any of the ingredients.
- Anyone planning anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers, facial peelings, laser or ultrasound-based treatments two weeks either side Profhilo treatments.
What is the difference between Polynucleotides and Profhilo?
Profhilo contains the highest concentration of pure hyaluronic acid.
Firstly, its hydrating properties come from hyaluronic acid’s ability to hold onto 1000 times its weight in water.
Secondly, thanks to the way it is formulated, it has the added advantage of stimulating collagen. This is what gives your skin that dewy look after treatment.
Polynucleotides do not contain hyaluronic acid. Their action on the skin is slower resulting in improvement of the skin via multiple bio-regenerative effects as discussed above. It is a fantastic option for under-eye area where Profhilo is not suitable.
Depending on your skin concerns, both treatments can be combined to give you cumulative results.
What is the difference between Polynucleotides and Dermal Fillers?
While both treatments are injected into the skin, that is where their similarities end.
Unlike hyaluronic acid-based fillers, the results of polynucleotides aren’t as immediate because change must happen at a cellular level.
Polynucleotides are used to rejuvenate the skin and improve overall skin quality whilst dermal fillers add volume to treated areas, to give structure, definition, and contour to the face.
Polynucleotides don’t contain hyaluronic acid like fillers do. Instead, they are comprised of biopolymers – stretchy molecules made from fragments of fish DNA. Despite their differences, polynucleotides work very well in conjunction with HA fillers, meaning you’ll get both an instant and long-term boost.
What is the difference between Polynucleotides and Skin Boosters?
Skin boosters contain unlinked hyaluronic acid with amino acids, other hydrating agents, or antioxidants. They have an instant gentle lifting effect on the skin as well as hydration. The hyaluronic acid attracts water and has a mild plumping effect. This helps to diminish fine lines and give your skin a glow. However, there is no regeneration, so the effects are short-term.
Polynucleotides on the other hand have multiple effects: they boost fibroblast production, initiate the tissue repair process, regulate pigmentation pathways, reduce inflammation, and promote hydration. Their benefits take a little longer to be seen, but are more wide ranging, longer lasting and noticeable.
Polynucleotides are the only injectables that can influence at a cellular level. Not only are they amazing for skin regeneration on their own. They truly stimulate your skin in the most natural way.
Can I combine Polynucleotides with other Injectable treatments?
Not only are they amazing for skin regeneration on their own, but they are also invaluable as pre-treatment, priming the skin for other injectable skin treatments such as anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers and Profhilo.
Can I have Polynucleotides on the same day as Botox® and Dermal Fillers?
A 2 week interval is advised before or after anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers.
