When Do Botox Results Start to Show?

If you have recently had treatment and keep checking the mirror to see whether anything has changed, you are not alone. One of the most common questions I hear is: “When does Botox kick in?”

Most people begin to notice a change over the first few days, with clearer softening during the first week. The result then continues to develop, which is why around two weeks is often used as a sensible point to assess how everything has settled.

That does not mean every face—or every treatment area—follows an identical timetable. Some people notice an early change sooner, while others develop more gradually. The product used, the muscles treated, the dose, your individual response and the result you are aiming for can all influence what you see and when you see it.

If you are still researching treatment, the important thing is not to chase the quickest possible change. The aim should be a result that suits your face, preserves the right amount of natural expression and has been planned safely after a proper consultation.

Updated for 2026: patient-friendly guidance from a Wimbledon aesthetic doctor

I’m Dr Suresh Mohan, a GMC-registered medical doctor. I offer doctor-led consultations and aesthetic treatments from my clinic in West Wimbledon, close to Raynes Park. I have written this guide in the same way I would explain the timeline during a consultation: clearly, calmly and without pretending that every person will respond in exactly the same way.

People commonly use “Botox” as a familiar shorthand. Botulinum toxin is a prescription-only medicine, so an individual assessment is needed before any treatment is considered. A consultation should be about whether treatment is appropriate for you—not about pressuring you into having it.

Quick answer

You may notice the first effects after a few days. Many patients see a more obvious difference across the first week, while the result continues to settle after that. A review at around two weeks can be useful if your practitioner has recommended one.

Still moving at day three, five or seven does not automatically mean the treatment has failed. It may simply be too early to judge the finished result.

Botox Results Day by Day: A Realistic Timeline

It helps to think of the result as a gradual transition, rather than an on-and-off switch. The following timeline is a practical guide for facial expression lines. It is not a promise that every patient will see the same change on the same day.

Day 0: Treatment day

The medicine has been placed, but the visible effect is not immediate. You should expect your usual facial movement to still be present when you leave the clinic.

Small injection-point marks, mild redness or tiny bumps can occur and commonly settle quickly. Follow the personalised aftercare you have been given.

Days 1–2: Usually too early to judge

Some licensed formulations have shown early changes in some patients, including within the first 24 hours, but many people will not see a meaningful difference yet.

If you can still frown or raise your eyebrows normally, that is not surprising. Try not to compare your day-one face with somebody else’s day-seven photograph.

Days 3–5: Early softening may appear

This is when many people first notice that a treated movement feels slightly less strong. You may see a softer crease when you frown, smile or raise your eyebrows.

The change can be subtle at first. You may feel it before it looks obvious in a photograph.

Days 5–7: The difference often becomes clearer

During the first week, treated muscles may begin to feel noticeably more relaxed. Expression lines caused by movement can start to look softer, while your face should still look like you.

It is also possible for one area or one side to seem slightly ahead of another while the response is developing.

Days 7–14: The result continues to settle

For many facial treatments, the second week gives a much fairer picture of the result. Movement, balance and the degree of softening are easier to assess than they were after only a few days.

This is why a practitioner may ask you to wait before deciding that you need any adjustment.

After two weeks: Assess, do not automatically add more

If you were advised to attend a review, this is a useful time to discuss the result. A review is not an automatic top-up appointment. Sometimes the best decision is to leave a natural, balanced result exactly as it is.

Day-by-day Botox results timeline from treatment day to two weeks

The timing varies, but many patients notice early softening after a few days and a clearer result across the first two weeks.

Does Botox Work Straight Away?

Not usually in the sense of an immediate, finished cosmetic result. You should not expect your facial movement to change the moment the injections are completed.

However, it is too absolute to say that nobody can notice anything within 24 hours. Timings reported in the official information for licensed botulinum toxin products are not identical. Some describe early effects within two or three days, some within the first week, and one formulation reports an effect in some people from the first day.

The practical message is simple: an early change can happen, but a day-one mirror check cannot tell you what your final result will look like.

Can Botox work in 24 hours?

It can begin to have an effect early in some people, depending in part on the formulation and the individual response. But if you do not see a difference after 24 hours, there is no reason to assume anything is wrong. Most people need more time before the change becomes obvious.

Why do some before-and-after posts make it look instant?

Lighting, expression, camera angle, makeup and the timing of the “after” photograph can all change what you see online. A genuine day-by-day comparison should use similar lighting and the same facial expression. Even then, another person’s timeline does not predict yours.

What Does It Feel Like When Botox Starts Working?

Many patients describe the change as a treated movement feeling less strong or requiring a little more effort. For example:

  • Your frown may not pull together as firmly.
  • Your forehead may feel calmer when you try to raise your eyebrows.
  • Lines beside the eyes may crease less strongly when you smile.
  • Makeup may sit more smoothly where movement lines have softened.

It should not feel as though a mask has suddenly dropped over your face. A good result is planned around your anatomy, your usual expressions and how much movement you would like to preserve.

Why Does It Take Time?

Botulinum toxin does not fill a line and it does not add volume. It works by temporarily reducing the nerve signals that tell selected muscles to contract.

That process develops over time. As the treated muscle activity becomes less forceful, movement-related lines can appear softer. The skin itself may then look smoother because it is no longer being repeatedly folded with the same strength.

This also explains why a deeply etched line may not disappear completely. Treatment can reduce the movement that keeps reinforcing it, but a line that is visible at rest may need time to soften and may not vanish.

Why Do Clinics Often Review Botox at Two Weeks?

Two weeks is a useful practical checkpoint because the result has usually had time to become much clearer. It is not a magical deadline at which every formulation reaches its absolute biological maximum, and official product information shows that maximum response can be assessed later for some products.

From a patient’s point of view, waiting gives us a more reliable answer to the questions that matter:

  • Has the intended movement softened?
  • Does the result look balanced in motion as well as at rest?
  • Is enough natural expression still present?
  • Has a line softened as much as could reasonably be expected?
  • Would changing anything genuinely improve the result?

A careful review is about assessment, not automatically putting in more product. More is not always better. If the result is soft, natural and balanced, leaving it alone can be the right clinical decision.

Dr Mo’s approach

I would rather start with a considered plan and see how your face responds than chase an unnaturally frozen result. The consultation is where we discuss what bothers you, what you still want to be able to express and whether treatment is appropriate at all.

There is no charge for that initial consultation, and there is no obligation to go ahead.

Does Botox Kick In at Different Times in Different Areas?

Yes. Different muscles have different strength, depth and patterns of movement. The intended result is also different from one area to another, so it is more useful to assess function and appearance than to expect one universal day.

Treatment area What you may notice first When the result is easier to judge Useful expectation
Frown lines The frown feels less forceful and the brows pull together less strongly. Often across the first one to two weeks. A line etched into the skin at rest may soften without disappearing completely.
Forehead lines Less lifting movement and softer horizontal creasing. Usually clearer during the first two weeks. Forehead treatment needs care because brow position and forehead movement are connected.
Crow’s feet Less strong crinkling at the outer corners of the eyes when smiling. Often clearer during the first week and beyond. Natural smile movement can be preserved; the goal does not have to be zero movement.
Lip flip A subtle change in how the upper lip turns out during expression. Often judged over roughly one to two weeks. This is a small functional change, not a substitute for lip filler and not a way to add volume.
Lower-face areas A change in the targeted muscle action rather than instant visual smoothing. Timing depends strongly on the muscle and the purpose of treatment. These areas require individual assessment and should not be compared directly with a forehead timeline.

If you are considering treatment for a particular area, I explain the likely timeline during your doctor-led Botox consultation in Wimbledon. Patients also visit from Raynes Park, Kingston, Surbiton and across South West London.

Different facial muscles can respond on slightly different timelines, which is why treatment should be planned individually.

What If I Can Still Move After Botox?

Movement is not the same as treatment failure. The answer depends on when you are checking, which area was treated and what result you agreed with your practitioner.

Three days after Botox and I can still frown

This is usually too early to judge the finished response. Some early softening may be present, but full-strength movement can still be noticeable.

Five days after Botox and I can still move

The effect may still be developing. Look for a change in the strength of movement rather than expecting complete immobility.

Seven days after Botox and I still have lines

Lines caused by movement may continue to soften. A line that is already visible while your face is resting can remain because it is part of the skin, not only the muscle movement beneath it.

Ten days after Botox and it does not look finished

You are approaching a more useful assessment point, but a few more days can still change the appearance. If a review was included in your plan, follow the timing given by your clinic.

Two weeks after Botox and I see very little change

Contact the treating clinic for an assessment. There may be a straightforward explanation, including a deliberately conservative dose, a strong muscle, a difference in the intended treatment area or individual variation. An in-person review is more useful than trying to diagnose the result from a mirror or a message alone.

A natural result can still include expression

Many patients tell me they want to look fresher or less tense without looking “done.” Preserving some appropriate movement can be part of achieving that. The measure of success is not whether your forehead is completely motionless; it is whether the agreed concern has improved in a way that looks balanced and feels right for you.

What Can Affect How Quickly Botox Kicks In?

There is no single factor that lets us predict the exact day. The following can all make a difference:

Your muscle strength and movement pattern

A strong frown or forehead muscle may respond differently from a smaller or less active muscle. Anatomy is one reason a face-to-face assessment matters.

The area being treated

A small expression muscle is not directly comparable with a powerful jaw muscle or a treatment intended to reduce sweating.

The dose and treatment plan

A carefully conservative plan may develop differently from a stronger one. Dose should be chosen for you, not copied from a social-media post.

The licensed product used

Official product information reports different onset and maximum-response timings. “Botox” is often used casually for a category that contains more than one medicine.

Your individual response

Two people treated appropriately in the same area can still notice their results on different days. Biology is not a stopwatch.

Whether the line is dynamic or static

A movement line may soften as muscle action reduces. A deeper line present at rest can take longer to improve and may remain visible.

Does Botox Work Faster the More Often You Have It?

Some returning patients feel that they recognise the early change more easily because they know what to look for. They may also have a different movement pattern after previous treatment.

That does not guarantee that every future treatment will start sooner. Timing, dose, area and individual response can still vary. Treatment should not be repeated simply to chase speed, and appointments should be planned safely with your prescriber.

If you are considering a break, my guide to what happens if you stop Botox explains what patients can realistically expect.

Can You Make Botox Kick In Faster?

There is no reliable home trick that safely forces the result to appear sooner. Extra exercise, massaging the area, facial gadgets, heat or taking unapproved medicines will not improve a carefully planned treatment.

The sensible approach is to follow your aftercare, leave the treated area alone and allow the medicine time to work. If you have an important event, plan the consultation and treatment well in advance rather than booking at the last minute.

Good treatment is about the quality and suitability of the outcome—not winning a race to day three.

What Should You Do While Waiting for Botox to Work?

The waiting period does not need to be complicated. Follow the specific instructions from your treating clinic, because they know which areas were treated and how.

Simple aftercare reminders

  • Do not rub or massage the treated areas unless your clinician has specifically told you to do so.
  • Keep pressure off the injection sites on the day of treatment.
  • Follow the advice you were given about exercise, heat, alcohol, skincare and other treatments.
  • Do not keep testing the muscles every few minutes. Normal expressions will not make the treatment “wear out,” but constant checking can make you more anxious.
  • Contact the clinic if something feels unusual or worries you. You do not need to wait for a scheduled review to ask for advice.

A good result can soften a concern while preserving natural expression; complete immobility is not the only measure of success.

What If One Side Kicks In Before the Other?

A small difference can be noticeable while the result is developing. Faces are naturally asymmetrical, muscles are not identical on both sides, and one side can appear to respond ahead of the other.

Try to compare the same expression in the same lighting and allow the planned settling period. Taking one neutral photograph and one expression photograph every few days is more useful than repeatedly scrutinising the mirror.

If a difference remains at the point your practitioner asked you to review the result, contact the clinic. Do not try to correct it yourself and do not book an unplanned treatment elsewhere before the original result has been assessed.

What if my eyebrows look different while it is settling?

Brow position is influenced by several muscles working together, so early differences need context. An experienced practitioner will assess your face at rest and in movement before deciding whether any action is appropriate. Sometimes observation is all that is needed.

Please get in touch if you are worried

Mild uncertainty about timing is common. If you develop symptoms that are severe, unusual, worsening, affect your vision, swallowing, breathing or general health, seek prompt medical advice. For a non-urgent concern about your treatment result, contact your treating clinic so it can be assessed properly.

What If Botox Has Not Worked After Two Weeks?

If you can see little or no change after the review period recommended by your clinic, arrange an assessment with the practitioner who treated you. There are several possible explanations, and not all of them mean the treatment was “bad.”

  • The original plan may have been deliberately conservative.
  • The muscle may be stronger than expected.
  • The change may be present in movement but less obvious in a line etched into the skin.
  • The area may need a different treatment strategy rather than simply more product.
  • Individual response can vary, and a small number of people may respond less strongly.

The safest next step is not to demand an automatic top-up. It is to review the original aim, examine the muscle movement and decide whether doing anything further would be appropriate.

Could it still improve after day 14?

Yes, some change can continue beyond two weeks, and official product information for some licensed formulations assesses maximum response later. Your own practitioner should advise you based on the product used, the treatment area and what they see at review.

When Is Botox at Its Peak—and How Long Does It Last?

Patients often use “peak” to mean the point when the visible result looks strongest or most settled. For many facial treatments, the result is much easier to judge at around two weeks, but the official timing differs between products and some studies assess maximum response later.

Once the result has developed, it is temporary. Muscle activity gradually returns over time. The duration varies with the area, dose, muscle strength, product and individual response. It should fade gradually rather than switch off overnight.

Do not rush to rebook simply because you notice the first small return of movement. A safe maintenance plan should be agreed with your prescriber and should take account of how you responded, how long the benefit lasted and whether you still want treatment.

Planning Treatment Around a Holiday, Wedding or Important Event

If you have an important date in mind, please do not plan treatment the day before. You need time for the result to develop, for common injection-point effects to settle and—if your treatment plan includes it—for a review.

A consultation several weeks in advance gives us room to discuss:

  • whether treatment is suitable for you;
  • which areas, if any, would support the result you want;
  • how much natural movement you would like to keep;
  • your medical history, medicines and previous treatment experience;
  • a realistic timeline without last-minute pressure.

If you have never had treatment before, allowing extra time is particularly sensible. You may also decide after the consultation that you would prefer to wait or not proceed—and that is completely fine.

Frequently Asked Questions About When Botox Kicks In

How long does Botox take to kick in?

Many people notice early softening after a few days and a clearer change during the first week. The result continues to develop, so around two weeks is often a more useful time to assess it. Exact timing varies by product, area, dose and individual response.

Why does Botox take two weeks to work?

It takes time for the medicine to reduce the nerve signals to the targeted muscle and for the visible effect to develop. Two weeks is commonly used as a practical review point, although it is not a universal maximum for every licensed formulation.

Can Botox start working after 24 hours?

An early effect is possible in some people and with some formulations. However, many patients will not see a meaningful change after one day. No visible difference at 24 hours is not evidence that treatment has failed.

Is it normal to still be able to frown after three days?

Yes. Three days can be too early to judge the full response. Look for gradual softening and follow the review timing given by your treating clinic.

Why can I still move my forehead after seven days?

The effect may still be developing, and preserving some movement may have been part of your treatment plan. A good result does not always mean a completely motionless forehead.

What should I do if Botox has not worked after 10 days?

Give it the full assessment period recommended by your clinic unless you have a concern that needs earlier advice. If there is still little change at review, contact the practitioner who treated you for an in-person assessment.

Can Botox look uneven while it is kicking in?

A temporary difference can be noticeable while the response develops, and faces are naturally asymmetrical. Allow the agreed settling time, then ask the treating clinic to assess any difference that remains.

What makes Botox kick in faster?

There is no dependable home method to speed it up safely. The product, treatment area, dose, muscle strength and individual biology affect timing. Follow your aftercare and let the result develop.

Does Botox work faster after repeated treatments?

Some returning patients recognise the early change more readily, but repeated treatment does not guarantee a faster onset every time. Each appointment should still be planned individually.

When should I contact the clinic?

Contact the treating clinic if you are worried, if the result has not developed by the advised review point, or if anything feels unusual. Seek prompt medical advice for severe or worsening symptoms, visual changes, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or concerns about your general health.
