Achieving a Youthful Appearance

A youthful face is characterised by smooth contours, high cheekbones, hollow jowls and a defined jawline. These features together comprise the triangle of youth, with its base at the top and summit below.

As we grow older our skin loses its moisture and elasticity. In addition to the physical changes under the surface of the skin this conspires to reverse this triangle of youth’s composition. This can be seen as a hollowing in the temple area and we lose volume in our cheeks, manifesting as tired under eye areas, nose to lip lines, as well as less defined jawline with jowl formation.

What are the dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are a popular cosmetic treatment that involves injecting a substance into the skin to add volume and hydration, smooth out lines and wrinkles. This helps restore our youthful facial features.

Our fillers are made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body that helps keep the skin hydrated and plump.

Hyaluronic acid can retain up to 1000 times its own weight in water, assisting in maintaining the skin’s moisture and elasticity. Hyaluronic acid provides antioxidant protection, helping to remove unstable free radicals from the skin.

As we age, the natural production of hyaluronic acid in our body slows down, leading to a decrease in skin hydration, elasticity, and texture.

Dermal fillers in London are a popular pick for those looking to naturally enhance and revitalise their skin, making it a top treatment at my Wimbledon aesthetic clinic.

Whether you are looking to soften deeper wrinkles, enhance facial contours, volumise lips or refresh and hydrate your skin, dermal fillers offer an instant, subtle and long-lasting effect.

Dermal Fillers Procedure

In my London clinic, located in Wimbledon, the consultation and Dermal Fillers treatment session spans approximately 1 hour.

After a thorough discussion about the procedure and completing the consent forms, I will take a pre-procedure photograph.

Dermal fillers do not require general anaesthetic or stitches and leave no scars. There is little to no downtime.

During the procedure, I will use a fine needle to inject a hyaluronic acid-based gel into the skin. The gel works to plump up and hydrate the skin, reduce the appearance of wrinkles, and create a smoother, more youthful looking complexion.

The results can last anywhere from six to eighteen months, depending on the individual patient’s skin type.

Afterwards, the area may have some redness and swelling, the majority of which will settle within 24-48 hours, but may take 2 weeks to fully resolve. You will be given full verbal and written aftercare instructions and a complimentary 2-week follow-up appointment.

Dermal Fillers Aftercare

Immediately following your dermal filler treatment, you may experience some redness, bruising, swelling or discomfort. This is a normal reaction and the majority of this will settle within 24-48 hours, but may take 2 weeks to fully resolve.

The amount of bruising you experience following the treatment can vary greatly depending on your own predisposition to bleeding.

After the dermal filler treatment, it is best to avoid:

  • Applying pressure on or touching the area for the first 48hrs.
  • Heat-inducing activities for 24hrs, such as strenuous exercise, spas, saunas and hot showers.
  • Hot food or drinks until the topical numbing cream has worn off.
  • Applying make-up or cosmeceutical products for 48hrs.
  • Drinking alcohol for at least 24hrs.
  • Skin treatments or laser treatments for 2 weeks following treatment.
  • Do not wear compressive masks, helmets or goggles for 2 weeks after the treatment.
  • Avoid any face down treatments or 2 weeks following treatment.

You may like to try arnica cream. It is commonly used to reduce bruising, swelling, inflammation and pain.

Dermal Fillers FAQ's

You will find here all the answers to the most nurturing questions about the dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle injections

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are an injectable treatment that can help restore lost volume, hydrate the skin, enhance facial contours and smooth out lines and wrinkles.

I use fillers containing hyaluronic acid which is a naturally-occurring molecule.

Dermal fillers are considered safe for use because they are made up of substances that are naturally found in the body.

This means the body is already familiar with and able to metabolise the filler, reducing the risk of adverse reactions.

Dermal fillers can vary in their properties and different ones are used to address different concerns.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic Acid is an amazing natural substance found in our bodies that helps keep skin looking healthy, youthful, and hydrated.

It acts as a cushioning agent and it has a unique ability to attract and hold onto moisture, giving skin a more hydrated appearance.

Hyaluronic Acid also stimulates collagen and elastin which addresses the volume and structure changes of ageing to restore more youthful features.

With its powerful hydrating and protective properties, Hyaluronic Acid can help keep skin looking its best.

What are the benefits of dermal fillers?

The benefit of dermal fillers is that they can be used to target specific areas of the face and provide quick and long-lasting results.

Additionally, they are considered a low risk, minimally invasive procedure that can be performed quickly with minimal downtime.

With dermal fillers, you can restore a more youthful, vibrant appearance and feel confident in your own skin.

How long do Dermal Fillers take to work?

Effects can be seen immediately. It may take 24-48 hours for the majority of any redness or swelling to settle. By two weeks these should have all resolved and final results achieved.

How long do Dermal fillers last?

This depends on the area treated and the thickness of the filler used, but the effects of the treatment are usually seen immediately and can last between 8 and 18 months. As their effects wear off you will notice the volume to gradually decrease and your face return to how it was previously.

To maintain your desired results, repeat treatments are usually needed.

What age is best for fillers?

As you enter your 30’s you may notice that some of your wrinkles have become deeper and more pronounced and the changes of ageing start to appear.

Dermal fillers can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and can restore lost volume and structure to restore more youthful features.

With minimal downtime and relatively short treatments, dermal fillers are ideal for those who want to look more youthful and refreshed.

Are dermal fillers safe?

There are many types of filler treatments available. The most common ingredient found in filler formulas is hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally-occurring sugar molecule that can be found in the sub-dermal layers of the skin. The fact that hyaluronic acid is a natural ingredient compatible with the human body means that fillers with hyaluronic acid are generally safer than other types.

Whilst classified as safe, there are risks, and it is important for you to be aware of them however slim they are. I will run through these in our consultation so you can make a fully informed decision.

You should always ensure dermal filler treatments are performed by an experienced and suitably qualified practitioner.

Can dermal fillers be removed?

Over time, dermal fillers will gradually be broken down and absorbed by the body. This can take anywhere between 6 to 18 months.

Hyaluronidase, also known as Hyalase, is an injectable treatment that can be used to safely remove dermal fillers. This enzyme is naturally found in the body, similar to hyaluronic acid, and can be used to break down and dissolve the filler material.

If you aren’t fully satisfied with the results of your filler treatment, it is possible to undo these results with hylase. This is another reason why hyaluronic acid filler treatments are considered safer than other types of filler or surgical treatments.

Again, it is important to choose experienced and suitably qualified practitioner when getting your dermal filler dissolved to ensure this is done safely.

Who should avoid having Dermal Fillers?

  • Pregnant women or breast feeding mothers.
  • If you are suffering from any skin infection in or near the treatment area, including cold sores.
  • The products I usually use contain lidocaine, a local anaesthetic to reduce the discomfort: If you have an allergy to this, let me know and I can source a suitable alternative.
  • Patients with autoimmune diseases or cancer treatment in the past year.
  • Sportsmen and women should be informed that hyaluronic acid dermal fillers contain an active ingredient which may give a positive result in a drug test.
  • Anyone planning facial peelings, laser or ultrasound-based treatments two weeks either side of the Dermal Filler treatments.

Are dermal fillers the same as Profhilo?

Dermal fillers and Profhilo are both injectable treatments used in aesthetic medicine, but they serve different purposes and have distinct properties:

Dermal Fillers:

    • Substance Used: Typically made from hyaluronic acid, but other substances can be used as well.
    • Purpose: Designed to add volume and fullness to areas that have thinned due to aging. Commonly used to plump lips, enhance shallow contours, soften facial creases, remove wrinkles, and improve the appearance of recessed scars.
    • Effect: Provides immediate results by filling in wrinkles or adding volume to areas such as the lips or cheeks.
    • Duration: Depending on the type of filler and the area treated, results can last from 6 months to 2 years or more.

Profhilo:

    • Substance Used: Composed of a high concentration of hyaluronic acid, but it’s not used to add volume in the same way as fillers. It’s more of a skin bio-remodeling treatment.
    • Purpose: Aims to hydrate the skin from the inside out and stimulate the production of collagen and elastin. It improves skin tone, texture, hydration, and overall radiance.
    • Effect: Unlike fillers, Profhilo doesn’t add volume or change the shape of your face. Instead, it works on improving the skin’s quality and elasticity.
    • Duration: The effects of Profhilo can last around 6 months, but it usually requires two treatments about a month apart for optimal results.

In summary, while both dermal fillers and Profhilo are injectables and contain hyaluronic acid, dermal fillers are primarily used to add volume and smooth wrinkles, whereas Profhilo is used to improve skin quality, hydration, and elasticity. The choice between the two would depend on the specific concerns and goals of the patient.

Can I combine Dermal Fillers with other Injectable Treatments?

Yes, most definitely. Dermal fillers address volume deficit and are used for facial contouring. They beautifully complement other injectable treatments such as Anti Wrinkle Injections and Profhilo which address different concerns.

Can I have Dermal Fillers on the same day as Profhilo?

You can have Anti-Wrinkle injections and Dermal Filler treatments on the same appointment.

A two week interval is needed either side for Profhilo facial treatments. There are no such restrictions when you are using Profhilo treatments on other areas of the body.

To find out more about Dermal Fillers and Profhilo I invite you to read my recent article – Profhilo vs. Dermal Fillers: Which is Right for Your Skin Goals?

Where are dermal fillers injected?

Where Dermal Fillers are injected depends on the area you are concerned with. When addressing volume deficit or performing facial contouring these injections are usually deeper. If deeper lines are the primary concern, the injections are more superficial, under the skin to soften them. Lip injections are always superficial.

Do Dermal Filler injections hurt?

Dermal Filler injections are more uncomfortable than Profhilo and some areas, such as around the mouth, are more sensitive. I can use numbing cream and the products I use contain lidocaine, which can help significantly reduce this discomfort.

Where can I get my Dermal Fillers treatment in London?
