The Basics of Anti-Wrinkle Injections: What You Need to Know

Anti-wrinkle injections, also known as neuromodulators, are a popular non-surgical cosmetic treatment for reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. The injections contain a purified protein that relaxes the facial muscles responsible for creating wrinkles. When injected in the targeted areas, the protein temporarily blocks the signals between the nerves and the muscles, allowing the muscles to relax.

The most common areas treated with anti-wrinkle injections are the forehead, between the eyebrows, and around the eyes. It can also be used for facial slimming and can help with teeth grinding and excess sweating. The procedure is quick and relatively painless, with most patients experiencing only minor discomfort or a slight stinging sensation during the injections. The effects of the treatment typically last for three to four months, after which a follow-up treatment is recommended to maintain the results.

How Anti-Wrinkle Injections Combat Ageing: The Science Behind It

The active ingredient in Anti-wrinkle injections is a purified protein (botulinum toxin A) that blocks the nerve signals responsible for muscle contractions. Most people are familiar with the name Botox®. This is one of three main reputable brands containing the same protein: botulinum toxin A.

Over time, the repeated contraction of the muscles of facial expression can cause lines and wrinkles to form in the skin. These are most commonly seen in areas of the face that are the most expressive: the forehead, around the eyes, and between the eyebrows. At first, we notice these when making expressions, and these are known as dynamic lines. Over time these become deeper and form resting lines.

Anti Wrinkle injections work by addressing the root cause of wrinkles, relaxing the muscles in the treated area. This allows the overlying skin to smooth out, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. They are great at addressing dynamic lines and will definitely help with resting lines, but it is important to be aware deeper resting lines may take two or three treatments to resolve. On occasion, other treatments may be more appropriate, such as Dermal Fillers or Profhilo. It is important your practitioner assesses and advises you appropriately so that you can make a fully informed decision on your skincare.

What to Expect During an Anti-Wrinkle Injection Treatment

Before your Botox treatment, your practitioner should conduct a thorough consultation to determine your goals and assess your suitability for the treatment. They will discuss any potential risks or side effects and give you an idea of what to expect during and after the procedure.

During the treatment, your practitioner should use a fine needle to inject the anti-wrinkle solution into the targeted areas of your face. Most patients experience only mild discomfort during the injections, which typically take no more than 10-15 minutes to complete. After the injections, you may experience some redness or swelling at the injection site, but this should subside within a few hours.

Are Anti-Wrinkle Injections Safe? Common Concerns and Risks

Anti-wrinkle injections are considered safe when administered by a qualified and experienced practitioner. They have been used in the NHS as treatment for a variety of medical conditions for over 40 years.

However, as with any medical procedure, there are potential risks and side effects to be aware of. Some common concerns people have include bruising, swelling, redness, and a drooping of the eyelid, eyebrow or smile.

There is minimal swelling and any redness usually resolves within an hour depending on how sensitive your skin is. Bruising can occasionally happen at an injection site, but is usually mild, short lasting and coverable with makeup. Drooping of the eyelid, eyebrow or smile are thankfully very rare. It is important however to choose a qualified and experienced practitioner who not only uses techniques to minimise these risks, but is also there for you if a complication does arise and can guide you appropriately. Also be reassured the effects of anti-wrinkle injections are temporary, so on the very rare occasion of facial asymmetry, this will resolve within 4-6 weeks.

How Long Do Anti-Wrinkle Injections Last? Maintaining Your Results

The effects of anti-wrinkle injections typically last between three and six months. However, the exact duration can vary from person to person and depend on factors such as the area treated, the dosage used, how much you exercise and your metabolism.

To maintain the results of your treatment, it’s recommended that you schedule follow-up appointments with your provider to receive additional treatments as needed. Many people choose to have injections on a regular basis to keep their wrinkles and fine lines at bay. A minimum interval of three months is required before each treatment.

It’s also important to take care of your skin in between injections by avoiding excessive sun exposure, staying hydrated, and using high-quality skincare products.

Be reassured the results of anti-wrinkle injections are not permanent and will fully wear off, so if it’s’ not for you, an alternative skincare treatment plan can be considered.
